Why Choosing the Perfect Paint Colour Feels So Hard (And How to Make It Easy)

The time has finally come to re-decorate! You’re finally going to pick the perfect colour for your walls!

But then—overwhelm.

Hundreds of swatches, all slightly different, yet somehow the same. You collected so many Insta and Pinterest photos, and asked people what colour they used in there. You grab a few tester pots, paint patches on the wall, and wait.

But when you check them the next day, none of them look quite right. Sound familiar?

If choosing paint colours feels hard, you’re not alone. And the good news? It doesn’t have to be this way.

The Real Reason Paint Colours Feel So Difficult to Choose

Most people assume they’re just ‘bad with colour’ or that they don’t have the right designer instinct. But the real issue isn’t you—it’s the way colour works. Here’s what makes it tricky:

  1. Colours change in different lights – A colour that looks perfect in the shop or in a friend's space (or that in the famous influencer's home!) can look entirely different on your wall because of natural and artificial lighting.

  2. Swatches are deceptive – That tiny paint chip isn’t giving you the full picture. The way colour expands on a wall changes how we perceive it.

  3. No context means there is no way to limit your options – Most people choose colours in isolation, without considering how they’ll interact with furniture, flooring, or the overall mood of the space.

  4. Too many options, no clear method – Without a strategy, you’re left guessing. And second guessing. And when you’re unsure, you either play it too safe (hello, default white) or end up repainting multiple times.

The Simple Shift That Changes Everything

Instead of randomly testing colours and hoping for the best, imagine if you had a step-by-step approach that guided you to the perfect shade—one that feels intentional, cohesive, and just right.

  1. First you identify the lighting conditions in your space

  2. Then, you make a note of all the existing colours that remain.

  3. After that, you decide how you actually want to feel in that space. Calm? Lively? Inspired?

  4. And then finally, you put together a cohesive colour scheme.

When you get to this point, the choices are limited to a couple of colours and their handful of variations of different shades.

This is the point when you are ready to test colours! Not 10+ colours, only 3 at a time, solely driven by your carefully created colour palette!

Happy testing!!! Because the right colour doesn’t just make your home look better—it makes it feel better, too.
